Vivian Smith Toney, 80, of Hartwell, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Hartwell Health and Rehabilitation, two days after her 80th birthday.
Born on March 20, 1946, in Lavonia, GA, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas “J.T.” Smith and Ella Mae Smith. She was a graduate of Lavonia High School and later studied at Anderson College. Mrs. Toney was co-owner and operator of Toney’s Aluminum Foundry and Toney’s Sanitation & Recycling Inc. She was actively involved in the Junior Service League and the Garden Club of Georgia, where she especially enjoyed traveling across the state with friends and participating in club activities. Mrs. Toney was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Toney was happily married to her loving husband, John Douglas “Doug” Toney, whom she called “Tony,” for 53 years and 9 months before his passing in October of 2018.
Survivors include two sons: Kevin Toney (Phyllis) and Ron Toney, both of Hartwell; her daughter-in-law, Stacey Tucker; four grandchildren: Kristi Myerholtz (Grant), Jessica Seawright (Jason), Brian Toney (Heather), and Shana Certain (Taylor); eight great-grandchildren: Kylie Seawright, Canaan Myerholtz, Makenna Seawright, Hayden Bryan (Natalie), Braden Toney, LilyAnn Myerholtz, Carter Toney, and baby girl Certain on the way; one great-great-grand daughter Raelynn Bryan, and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Toney was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Shawn Toney; a brother, Thomas Smith of Lithia Springs; a sister, Jean Harmon of Hartwell; and her beloved Boston Terrier, Buster.
Her grandchildren’s fondest memories include long summer days spent at her home, enjoying time in the swimming pool. She and her husband, along with their children and grandchildren, also made many cherished memories at the family’s place in Myrtle Beach.
The family will celebrate her life with a graveside service on Wednesday, March 25, at 11:00 a.m. at Nancy Hart Memorial Park, 1171 Royston Highway, Hartwell, GA 30643. Her granddaughter, Jessica Toney Seawright, will be officiating the service and delivering the eulogy.
