Sara Elizabeth (Vickery) Ayers, 89, formerly of Hartwell, died January 18, 2025, in Grovetown, Georgia. Born September 11, 1935, in Hart County, she was the daughter of the late Julian B Vickery and Sara “Ruth” Herring Vickery. Sara was a retired elementary school teacher who had worked for the Hart County School System for over thirty-four years.
Sara is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Ray “Alton” Ayers, and daughters, Rae (Larry) Guthrie of Athens, Vickie (Randy) Wurst of Grovetown, and Patti (Craig) Daniel of Hartwell, along with eleven grandchildren: Bennett (Grace) Guthrie, Bailey (Jay) Veal, Clara Wurst, George (Kathryn) Wurst, Hayden Guthrie, Emma Wurst, Andrew Guthrie, Sophie Wurst, Jack Wurst, Jackson Daniel, and Lincoln Daniel, and two great-granddaughters, Baylor and Birdie Wurst. In addition to her parents, Sara was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Ray Ayers.
Sara was a member of Liberty Hill Methodist Church located in the community she lived most of her life. She graduated from Hart County High School in 1953, where she had become very involved in the local and state 4-H Club, an organization she remained active in through various roles for several decades. Sara obtained her Associates Degree from ABAC Jr. College in 1955, and went on to graduate from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics in 1957. Upon graduation, she worked as a Home Economist for the Hart County EMC for eight years, helping families design efficient kitchens. She began teaching at Nancy Hart Elementary School in 1967 and later transferred to Hartwell Elementary from where she retired in 2001. While teaching, Sara completed her Masters Education Degree at UGA, as well as her Education Specialist Degree in Administration Support from Clemson University.
The family will hold a memorial service at 2:30 on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at Liberty Hill Church (1473 Liberty Hill Church Rd., Hartwell), preceded by visitation beginning at 1:30. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Liberty Hill Church, PO Box 754, Hartwell, GA, 30643.
