Obituary for Lucy Harriett Gilman (Thornton)

Mrs. Lucy Harriett Thornton Gilman, of Union City, GA, died at Christian City Nursing Home on Friday, June 3, 2016. She was 96 years old.

Lucy was born on January 22, 1920, in Dewy Rose, GA to the late Jesse Fleming Thornton and Elizabeth Carroll Thornton. She grew up in Hartwell, GA as one of eight children and then attended Berry College in Rome, GA. Lucy married Julian Addison Gilman, Jr. of Richmond, VA on May 30, 1942, in Atlanta, GA. During WWII, she resided in Brooklyn, NY, while Julian, whom she called “Gill”, served his country in the U.S. Navy. After the war, the couple settled in Atlanta and had two children: John and Brenda.

Lucy is survived by her grandchildren: Jhaysin Gilman and his wife Carissa and Christy Reeves Wees; great-granddaughter, Cheyenne Wees; daughter-in-law, Jan Gilman; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Julian; son, John Gilman; daughter, Brenda Gilman Reeves; and siblings: Maude Lee Jennings, Edgar Thornton, Gladys Campbell, Flora Wilhite, Mary McCurley, Charles Thornton, and Sara Musselwhite.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lucy Gilman will be held on Sunday, June 12, at 2 o’clock from the graveside in Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
