Jean Weyer Zgraggen, a resident of Hartwell since 2009, has died at age 97 on May 9, 2026.

She was born on a farm in Washington Missouri on August 7, 1928, the sixth child of Henry and Anna Kopp Weyer. The family moved to St. Louis as she started her second year of high school.

Jean is a devout Catholic and was so happy to live near the St. Louis Cathedral and become a member of the parish. It was quite a change from the small town church where she was baptized. Rosati Kain High School is just across the street.  She also attended Webster University and the University of Missouri at St. Louis.

She is preceded in death by her husband, George Arthur Zgraggen and a daughter, Mary Suzanne, who died in infancy; also two brothers, three sisters, a granddaughter, Ann Marie Austin and a daughter-in-law, Gale Zgraggen.

She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Austin, her son Tom Zgraggen of Royston and three granddaughters: Dr. Stephanie Zgraggen of Braselton, Suzanne (David) Brookshire of Cartersville, Catherine (Brett) Pearson of Roswell. She leaves three great grandchildren: Madison and Mason Brookshire and Everett Pearson and nieces and nephews. She is also survived by one sister, Sister M. Jean Ann SSND of St. Louis.

As the children were growing, Jean was active in school and parish activities, serving on committees as head of the Mother's Club.  She retired after seventeen years working at Metlife.

Jean would always say that she lived in the best of times. So many things happened during her lifetime. She was always interested in the daily news. She was a member of the Ladies' Circle at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. She will be buried with her husband George in Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis. Memorials to the building fund of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church or the St. Vincent de Paul Society is appreciated.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 1099 Benson Street, Hartwell Georgia on June 13, 2026 at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00-1:00 pm with a mass to follow afterwards.
